Using Our Web Powers for Good

Erin Lewis

We’ve had some great discussions on CTRL+CLICK CAST with experts in our community who make giving back a priority. It takes many different forms, but the underlying idea is the same: what we do affects a lot of people, so we should do some good.

From teaching to promoting accessibility practices to using tech for social advocacy, our guests share their unique experiences and offer suggestions for ways to improve our world through tech.

  • Teaching UX Design
UX expert and Center Centre co-founder Dr. Leslie Jensen-Inman discusses the limitations of a traditional education path for web workers, what she’s doing to help budding UX professionals, and what makes a good teacher and a good student.
  • Accessibility 101
Accessibility advocate and developer Greg Tarnoff breaks down the basics of accessibility. He explains accessibility myths and benefits, and the consequences of neglect. We also talk about how accessibility affects the entire workflow through development, design and leadership, and share resources that will help you create a more inclusive web.
  • Technology for Social Good
Digital strategist Aisha Satterwhite discusses the role of technology in social advocacy. She details how technology for social campaigns has evolved as tech has become more accessible and how technology complements on-the-ground advocacy.
  • Improving Diversity in Tech
Diversity advocates Ashe Dryden and Faruk Ateş discuss the lack of diversity in the web/tech industry and what we can do about it. We discuss the difference between diversity and inclusion, and why both remain a challenge for our industry. We also draw parallels with the challenges of embracing accessibility in design and development.
